Fr Paulino’s Trial Update

The trial of Fr. Paulino Miranda and 20 others resumed on July 25, 2011. The prosecution called ASP Ravi as its witness. ASP Ravi gave evidence that he led a team of 13 arresting officers.

During cross examination he admitted that he did not personally arrest anyone nor could he specify the place of arrest of some of the accused.

On July 26, 2011, Chief Inspector Khairul was called as the next prosecution witness. He gave evidence that he led 3 arresting officers but he did not know who arrested one of those named in his police report. The trial is now adjourned to September 22 and is scheduled to continue on 23, 26 and 27 September.

Fr Paulino is charged under the Police Act. The alleged offence is said to have been committed on 9.11.2008 at Laman MBPJ (Civic Center) between 9.50pm and 10.10pm. He is charged together with 20 others that include several Opposition Members of Parliament and State Assemblymen of the current Selangor State Government.

If found guilty, Fr Paulino can be fined between RM2,000 and RM10,000 or imprisoned for a term not exceeding 2 years or both.

The Prosecution is led by Cik Noorin Badaruddin. Fr Paulino is represented by Francis Pereira (of the Catholic Lawyers Society) and assisted by R Shanmugam and T. Sharmini. Mr Gobind Singh Deo represents the MP and State Assemblymen while 7 lawyers represent the remaining accused.
