Red Mass 2017 – “Listen To God’s Voice To Do What Is Right”

His Grace, Archbishop Julian Leow, called on Catholic Lawyers to listen to God’s voice and to do what is right and speak the truth. He encouraged lawyers not to fear man, rather to fear God.

He made this call during his sermon at the Annual Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit (Red Mass) held at the Church of The Sacred Heart of Jesus, Peel Road, Kuala Lumpur. Over 50 Catholic lawyers together with their families and parishioners were present. Also present were several diplomats from various Foreign Missions.

Presiding together with the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur at the Red Mass were His Grace Archbishop Murphy Pakiam, Reverend Fr. Edwin Peter and the society’s spiritual adviser, Rev Fr. Michael Chua. Also present was YB Teresa Kok, Member of Parliament for Seputeh.

His Grace, Archbishop Julian explained that Jesus has put himself in a collision cause with the Pharisees, Sadducees and the authorities of the times. He threw away all comfort, security and safety he may have possessed, preferring instead to do the will of the Father.

“How many of us will take the risk as Jesus did? Or do we instead take the easier route to flow with the crowd. How many of us are prepared to make decision based on what is right instead of what is just. How many of us are burdened with the verdict of society. How many of us listen to the voice of men instead of the voice of God.”

These were some of the questions posed by His Grace at the Mass. His Grace enquired if “as lawyers and judges who know the law, interpret the law, make law and pass laws, whether these laws are in accordance with the laws of God and just, or are these laws made for convenience.”

Being the feast of St Agnes of Rome, His Grace reminded all of St Agnes courage and determination to stay true to God’s call. As a young girl she stood up for what is right despite the pressures surrounding her. His Grace reminded all to continuously pray for strength and courage to do what is right.

At the conclusion of the Mass, CLS President, Allen Miranda thanked all for attending the Mass and praying for the Catholic lawyers. He encouraged lawyers present to take up an active role in the CLS. He explained,

“We know all too well what is going on in our country. There is no need to elaborate. What we need to do is to seek solutions. We need write our own narrative, to show the true face of Christ so that the present and the future generation of Malaysians will come to know GOD. We need to inform everyone about the truth regarding our faith .To do this we need everyone’s help.”

After mass and photo sessions, all were treated to a sumptuous lunch and fellowship ensued.
