Sabah Catholic Lawyers Hold Inaugural Red Mass 2012

Like other professions, members of the legal fraternity are called and chosen by God.
As such, they must respond and justify the call by performing good deeds in their profession as well as daily life.
This reminder came from Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu, Datuk John Lee when he celebrated the Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit, known as Red Mass, the first of its kind in Sabah, at the Church of Mary Immaculate in Bukit Padang, Saturday. Read more »

This Lent, in response to the theme “Listen To That Voice” we need to remind ourselves that right is right, even when nobody is doing it, and wrong is wrong, even if everybody is doing it.
One person on the side of God’s moral order is a majority.

Bishop Cornelius Sim: Homily For Red Mass 2012

One of our young ladies was involved in a car accident just before the New Year and will be spending the next 3 months immobilised due to a broken hip. She nevertheless was quite cheerful when I called her on the phone before I left.

Red Mass Celebration 2012

The Catholic Lawyers' Society Kuala Lumpur celebrated its 18th Annual Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit on 7 January 2012 at the Church of St. Thomas More, USJ Subang Jaya (STM).
The Mass, popularly known as the Red Mass was presided by His Grace, Rt. Rev. Cornelius Sim, DD, Apostolic Vicar, Brunei (Bishop of Brunei).
Con-celebrants were His Grace Archbishop Murphy Pakiam, Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, Rev. Fr. Jestus Pereira, the Society’s Ecclesiastical Assistant and Rev. Fr. Simon Labrooy, parish priest of STM. Read more »

CLS Joins Bar Council in Anti-Peaceful Assembly Bill Walk

Kill the Bill! This is one of the many sentiments expressed by those present at the walk this afternoon organised by the Bar Council against the Peaceful Assembly Bill.
The Bill was proposed by the Federal Government to replace the Internal Security Act (ISA).
More than 1000 lawyers together with members of the public gathered today and walked towards Parliament House to express their discontent towards the Bill. Read more »

Anger Grows Over Assembly Bill

A proposed law purportedly allowing greater freedom has many Malaysians up in arms, claiming it actually places more restrictions on the right to assemble and outlaws protests.
“There seems to be more control. What is most disturbing is that greater power is given to the police,” said Father Fabian Dicom of Penang diocese.
The Peaceful Assembly Bill 2011, tabled in parliament on November 22, bans street protests outright. Read more »

Proposed Law Ban Draws Cautious Praise

The Catholic Lawyers Society of Malaysia has cautiously welcomed a plan to abolish the controversial Internal Security Act (ISA), which includes the right of detention without trial.
Prime Minister Najib Razak on Thursday announced the plan ahead of yesterday’s Malaysia Day celebration, and further stated that two new anti-terrorism laws will be tabled in parliament before elections next year. Read more »

Over 200 guests and members got together to celebrate the Catholic Lawyers' Society’s 17th anniversary of its founding.
The event, held last night at the Oriental Banquet Restaurant, Petaling Jaya saw the presence of the Society’s Ecclesiastical Assistant Rev. Fr. Shamala's Lawyers Told To Discharge Themselves

The family of nurse S Shamala - who is embroiled in a legal battle for custody of her children following her husband's conversion to Islam - has instructed her lawyers to discharge themselves.
However, the Court of Appeal would not allow this to take effect until the lawyers can officially inform Shamala, who is said to be living in Australia with her two sons.
The court therefore postponed the hearing which had been fixed for today (Aug 1, 2011). Read more »
