CLS Press Statement: Sacrilegious Act By Journalist

The Catholic Lawyers’ Society Kuala Lumpur expresses dismay over the recent article appearing in the May issue of Al-Islam entitled ‘Tinjauan Al Islam Dalam Gereja – Mencari Kesahihan remaja Melayu Murtad’.

The article written by Muhd. Ridhwan Abdul Jalil @ Erwanz, displays utmost disrespect to the Catholic community when he admitted consuming Holy Communion and photographing the sacred specie. Although a police report has been lodged, no charges have yet been brought against the writer, the editor or even the publishers of the magazine. Read more »

CLS Press Statement: Stop The Discussions On Herald Case!

Recently there has been a spate of reports and discussions reported in the media with respect to the Herald Case.

As recent as 17 February 2009, TV-1 (RTM-1) aired a program entitled ISU@1 where a panel consisting of a “selective group” discussed the issue concerning the use of the term “Allah” with reference to the Herald Case.

The views of the panellists in the program were biased. The views expressed in the program are attempts to interfere with the proceedings in the Herald Case even before the Kuala Lumpur High Court could adjudicate on the matter. Read more »

CLS Press Statement: Unconstitutional Restrictions Imposed On Herald

The Catholic Lawyers' Society, Kuala Lumpur read with great disappointment the restrictions imposed by the Minister of Home Affairs in granting the printing and publishing permit of the Herald with the prohibition of the printing & publication of the Bahasa Malaysia segment in the Herald.

The Society is dismayed that the Minister prohibits the printing and publication of the Bahasa Malaysia segment of the Herald pending the decision of the Kuala Lumpur High Court on the use of the word `Allah' when the two are unrelated. Read more »

CLS Press Statement: Warning And “Show Cause” Letters Issued To Herald

A series of warning letters culminating in a “show cause” letter have been issued by the Home Ministry to the HERALD-The Catholic Weekly in respect of articles carried by the paper which, according to an official from the Home Ministry, were allegedly “politically inclined and touched on Islamic issues”.

The Herald is a weekly publication printed by the Catholic Church in Malaysia. It carries news of current affairs and religious and educational articles with a view to propagating the Catholic faith. Read more »

Civil Society looks to the Judicial System of a nation as the ultimate guardian of enshrined constitutional rights.

In this respect the Catholic Lawyers Society expresses its disappointment in the majority Federal Court decision of Lina Joy -vs- Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan and 2 Others for failing to recognize an individual's right to profess the religion of her choice. Read more »

CLS Press Statement: Court of Appeal Decision in Saravan vs Subashini

The Catholic Lawyers’ Society views with grave concern the implications of the majority decision of the Court of Appeal in the case of Saravanan a/l Thangathoray vs. Subashini a/p Rajasingam which denied the non-muslim wife her right to seek legal redress in regards to her civil marriage and the conversion of her minor son to Islam by her (recently converted) muslim husband.

Malaysia being a multi religious country has clear and distinct laws governing muslims and non muslims particularly pertaining to family matters and it is disheartening when the very institution which is in place to govern and protect the interest of all persons in accordance with the Federal Constitution and particularly non muslims based on Civil Laws refused to adjudicate when an aggrieved non-muslim wife sought redress in respect of her marriage and the religious status of her son.
