Whilst many celebrated Valentine's day and its eve with loved ones, the Catholic lawyers in Brunei, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching instead celebrated their vocation at the Red Mass.

The Red Mass was organised for the first time in the Apostolic Vicariate of Brunei on 13th February 2015 and at the Archdiocese of Kuching on 14th February 2015.

Coincidentally, the Red Mass at Kota Kinabalu was celebrated at the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu on 14th February 2015. Read more »

CLS members joined the legal fraternity in the Walk for Peace & Freedom to Parliament House today.

The Malaysian Bar had called for the walk as part of an on-going campaign for the repeal of the Sedition Act 1948.

In recent times, the Act has been used not just towards politicians but against lecturers. Lawyers have not been spared, as some have been charged or are being investigated under the Act. Read more »

The Catholic Lawyers held their 20th Anniversary Dinner & Dance on Saturday, 11th October 2014, at 7.30 p.m. at the Ballroom Dewan Tunku in Kelab Golf Negara Subang (KGNS).

Just under 400 guests and members attended the function.

Also present at this event were guests of honour, Archbishop Julian Leow and Archbishop Emeritus Tan Sri Murphy Pakiam. Read more »

The Catholic Lawyers’ Society held its annual retreat in the city of Kuching in Sarawak from 29th August to 1st September 2014.

The venue was the peaceful setting of the Home for Retired Priests situated in a suburb of Kuching. 

The members (and spouses) who attended the retreat were privileged to have as their retreat director the Archbishop of Kuching, Most Rev. John Ha. Read more »

Archbishop Emeritus Pakiam will continue to be in office and will now serve as the Administrator of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur.

The college of consultors elected Archbishop Emeritus Murphy Pakiam as the Administrator of the Archdiocese at their meeting announced by Rev. Fr. Jestus Pereira, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese. Read more »

The annual event saw the presence of its spiritual director, Rt. Rev Fr. Jestus Pereira, Rt Rev. Fr. Clarence Dass and Tan Sri Lim Leong Seng, Archdiocese Administrator. Read more »

The Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur has filed his application for leave to refer 26 questions of law to the Federal Court. The Application was filed on 11 November 2013 through his solicitors Fernandez & Selvarajah.

The Application is filed against the decision of the Court of Appeal made on 14th October 2013 that allowed the Government’s appeal prohibiting the Herald, the Catholic weekly newspaper from using the word ‘Allah’ in its Malay language edition. Read more »

The Court of Appeal on 10 September 2013 heard the Home Minister and the Government’s appeal against the High Court decision that allowed the Catholic Herald newspaper to use of the word 'Allah'.

Other parties to the appeal included 6 State Islamic Bodies and the Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association (MCMA).

Various other parties held a watching brief in support of the Kuala Lumpur Archbishop, the Respondent to the Appeal. Read more »

The Court of Appeal dismissed the Archbishop’s application to strike out the Government’s Appeal against the High Court decision that allowed the Herald newspaper to use the word Allah.

The Government is now at liberty to proceed with the hearing of the merits of the Appeal on September 10, 2013 i.e. on whether the Herald can use the sacred word Allah. The Appeal stems from the decision of the High Court delivered on December 31, 2009. Read more »
