Australian High Court Blocks Malaysia Refugee Swap

Australia's High Court dealt a heavy blow to the government on Wednesday by blocking its plans to send asylum-seekers to Malaysia, ruling they could not go to a nation lacking legal safeguards.

Australia had hoped to send up to 800 asylum-seekers to the Asian nation in exchange for resettling 4,000 of its refugees, and the decision leaves hundreds of boat people in legal limbo. Read more »

DAP: Sack Those Responsible For RTM1's 'Murtad' Report

DAP has lashed out at an RTM1 report which linked opposition leaders to the "Murtads in Malaysia & Singapore" Facebook group.

It was shown on its 8pm prime-time news slot last night.

DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua said in a statement that Information, Communications, and Culture Minister Rais Yatim must take responsibility for what he termed as "the most despicable piece of incendiary false news reporting on national TV, and ensure that those responsible for it are sacked immediately". Indian Supreme Court upholds compensation for unborn killed in accident

The federal Supreme Court of India, in a historic ruling, has upheld compensation for a pregnant woman who gave birth to a stillborn child following an accident.

The top Indian court upheld the claim that the unborn child is a person and therefore, the parents are entitled to compensation for the injury to the baby. Read more »

Asri: Woman Denies Embracing Christianity

Former Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin said that one of the 12 Muslims who were present at the Damansara Utama Methodist Church's Aug 3 event had denied having converted to Christianity.

While the woman did concede that there were others who have embraced Christianity, she had remained faithful to Islam.

The conversions, Asri said, was the fault of the country's Islamic institutions for failing to help underprivileged Muslims. Read more »

Bar Council: Ensure Fair Representation, Broad Inclusivity And Wide Consultation In Inter-faith Matters

The Malaysian Bar cautiously welcomes the announcement earlier this week of the formation of a “Jawatankuasa Pendengaran” (“the committee”) to resolve the controversy surrounding the raid undertaken by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (“JAIS”) on a multi-faith community thanksgiving event held at Damansara Utama Methodist Church (“DUMC”) in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, recently.

According to media reports, the committee will be headed by the Menteri Besar of Selangor, with the Mufti of Selangor and his deputy as members. Read more »

US Muslim Group Seeks Federal Probe

Associated Press (AP) reports that undercover New York Police Department officers were sent into minority neighborhoods to monitor bookstores, bars, cafes and nightclubs. AP also reports that the police used informants to monitor sermons.

The report claims that the CIA was helping New York City police gather intelligence from mosques and minority neighborhoods. Read more »

Christians And Prostitution: Sinar Harian Says Sorry

Malay language daily Sinar Harian today apologised for publishing an information text box accusing the 'Christian movement' of, among others, permitting prostitution and encouraging free mingling between the sexes.

Lawyer: Stop The Harassment & Ridicule

Muhamad Hj Burok, the lawyer representing the 12 Muslims who were present at a Thanksgiving Dinner held at Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) on Aug 3, has called on all to stop harassing his clients.

Muhammad in his press statement said that, “this unfortunate controversy is being fanned in various print and electronic media including blogs in a manner that incites tension amongst Malaysians.” Read more »

Bishop Troubled By Growing 'Religious Gulf'

Catholic Bishop Dr Paul Tan said the "nonsense about Christianity that it encourages free sex and permits prostitution" which appeared in a column in a Malay newspaper today was "symptomatic of the existing gulf in understanding between nominal Muslims and other religions in Malaysia."

"Now, I'm not going to call for a ban on that publication which I understand tends to express on occasion liberal views on politics," said the head of the diocese of Melaka-Johor in an immediate response to Malaysiakini which carried news of the Sinar Harian report. Read more »

More Mosque Built In France

The Hudson New York reports that there are more Islamic mosques being built in France than Roman Catholic churches.

It reports that there are more than 2,000 mosques in France in just the past ten years. By contrast, the Roman Catholic Church in France has built only 20 new churches during the past decade, and has formally closed more than 60 churches. Read more »

Church 'Raid': Selangor Forms Panel To Resolve Row

The Selangor state government today said it will set up a syura, or consultative council, to “resolve” the controversial raid by the Selangor state Islamic department (Jais) on a church in Petaling Jaya earlier this month.

Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim said the three-member council will include state mufti Tamyes Abdul Wahid, his deputy Abdul Majid Omar and Khalid himself. Read more »
