KL Archbishop's Communiqué - Non Consultation in the appointment of CBN schoolhead

The Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur (left) expressed disappointment on hearing the news of the appointment of Datin Seri Zavirah Bte Mohd Shaari as the principal of SMK Convent Bukit Nanas (CBN).

The appointed principal is not on the list submitted by the mission school authority.

This is in contradiction with the policy of maximum consultation enunciated by the Government in the report of the Royal Commission on the Teaching Services, West Malaysia, repeated in 1976 by the Minister of Education and reaffirmed by the Prime Minister in 1998 in Kota Kinabalu when he made an announcement that the Government would continue to consult the mission school authorities in the appointment of principals/teachers of mission schools.

The appointment of the principal of CBN is not only contrary to the Government policy of maximum consultation but has given the impression that it is the Government’s strategy to take over the mission schools in total disregard for the status, ethos and special character of mission schools, especially CBN.

The Archbishop appeals to the Director General of Education to reconsider this decision and graciously appoint an appropriately qualified principal who is nominated by the school owners.
